Seven US Air Force fighters, who had to land on an ice surface near the east coast of Greenland in the summer of 1942 and were given up, are to be recovered and made accessible to the public.
Buried in ice are two bombers B-17 (“Flying Fortress”) and five fighter planes Lockheed P-38 “Lightning” – a formation that entered the war history as “Lost Squadron”.
The air-planes are localised under a snow cover that today is more than one hundred meters thick. Scientists are sure that the five P-38s are well preserved in the cold and can be repaired and will be airborne again in the near future.
